Digital tachograph legislation was introduced into the UK and EU in May 2006. The legislation had a big impact on the way drivers’ information relating to driving, working and rest time is captured and used. With the digital tachograph all information is digitally recorded on a smartcard commonly called a 'Driver Card'.
Smartanalysis provides a fully managed, cost effective service to enable you to comply with the Digital Tachograph legislation. Smartanalysis works with all digital tachographs and scanned charts from older analogue tachographs can be downloaded to Smartanalysis giving you a one stop shop for recording, analysing and reporting tachograph data.
Transport operators using the latest digital tachographs can also take advantage of new developments such as Remote Download Devices to automate the download of digital tachograph data to Smartanalysis saving you significant time and money.
"We decided to use automatic remote download of digital tachograph data to safeguard our compliance and reduce the man hours spent managing the process and downloading data from the vehicle. Using remote download is saving us around ten man hours per week. The tachograph data is downloaded in the background for analysis and reporting using Smartanalysis from Exentra. We have worked with Exentra since 2007, they provide a good service and have delivered a cost effective solution for analysing our tachograph data."
John Burbridge, Group Quality and Compliance Manager, Turners (Soham) Ltd

To comply with the legislation regarding the Digital Tachograph you need to capture and store data from the Drivers’ smartcard and from the Digital Tachograph Vehicle Unit (VU). We supply you, free of charge, with Smartanalysis 'digital downloader' software that needs to be installed on a PC or number of PC’s in each of your depots. We can also supply you with the card readers and VU download devices that are required to transfer data from the Driver smartcard and the VU to the PC.
To capture data from the VU you need to use a VU download device. This device plugs into the Vehicle Unit in the cab and allows you to copy the data you require from the cab VU onto the download device. The VU download device can then be plugged into the PC in the depot and using the Smartanalysis digital downloader software you can send the VU data that you have collected to Smartanalysis.
Capturing data from the Driver smartcard could not be easier. The Driver simply puts their smartcard into a smartcard reader that is plugged into the PC in the depot. The Smartanalysis digital downloader software automatically recognises that a smartcard has been inserted, reads all of the data from the card and sends the data to Smartanalysis. When this process is complete the Driver will see a message on the screen asking them to remove their smartcard.
Alternatively Download Devices can be used to send the data direct to Smartanalysis without a PC and download software. Many operators are now looking at installing Remote Download Devices in the vehicle to automate the download of data direct from the vehicle in the background whilst it is in use. Once the download schedules have been set for both driver and vehicle data you can focus on your day job instead of managing the process for collecting data.
